Guwahati 2nd Most Polluted City: This report sheds light on the alarming air quality situation in India. A new report by IQAir, a Swiss air quality monitoring company, reveals that India is ranked as the third most polluted country in the world. Surprisingly, three Indian cities – Begusarai, Guwahati, and Delhi – are among the top most polluted cities in the world.
Guwahati’s Deteriorating Air Quality:
Guwahati, the gateway city to northeast India, experienced a notable decrease in air quality. Last year, it was ranked as one of the most polluted cities in the world, with an average PM2.5 concentration that far exceeded the guidelines set by the WHO. In 2022, Guwahati’s PM2.5 levels were significantly lower, but this year saw an alarming rise.
National Impact:
The Central Pollution Control Board highlighted the negative impact of air pollution on health. Did you know that air pollution is responsible for a staggering number of premature deaths each year? It’s estimated to be the cause of one in nine deaths worldwide. PM2.5 can worsen health conditions and cause various illnesses such as asthma, cancer, and lung disease.
Pollution Levels in Other Northeast Indian Cities:
The report also examined air quality in other northeastern cities. Silchar was found to have the lowest PM2.5 concentration, making it the cleanest city. Aizawl, Kohima, Imphal, and Agartala also showed relatively low levels of PM2.5.
Global Comparison vs Guwahati 2nd Most Polluted City:
Begusarai in Bihar has been identified as the city with the highest PM2.5 concentration, surpassing Guwahati and Delhi in terms of pollution levels. Bangladesh and Pakistan have been identified as the top two countries with the highest levels of pollution.
This report highlights the crucial importance of implementing stricter air quality regulations and taking measures to address air pollution in India.
